We had a good turnout for our April hui, and a full line-up of speakers around the theme of sustainable tourism and care for the environment.

First to speak was Jenn O'Connor Patterson from Venture Taranaki, reporting from the World Indigenous Tourism Summit in Waitangi.  Whilst cultural tourism is under-developed in Taranaki, there is potential on the mounga for Māori operators, and Jenn discussed some of the ideas and concerns expressed by indigenous communities around the world working with similar opportunities.

Next was Fern Brand, Partnerships Ranger for the Taranaki Mounga Project provided an update on the important work this ropu are doing in reducing pest numbers and re-introducing native species.

Finally, Cam Twigley from the host BTW Company presented a case study on the Ko Ngā Kowhitiwhiti project that they were involved in as part of the Curious Minds Science in Society platform.  This was a fascinating scientific study of the effects of different pollutants on freshwater and mahinga kai.
